Chanakya Neeti: Chapter 16

The following lines contain the ideas stated in the 16th chapter of Chanakya Neeti Sastra. Have a look:

(* Discretion is Advised)

A man who never remembers the Almighty will not get out of the life-death cycle. One who is deprived of the wealth of religion will never reach the doors-of-heaven, and someone who has not even dreamt of enjoying a woman. Such a person is comparable to a hatchet that destroys the forest of his mother’s youth. [A person with such a useless life has no explanation for taking birth … (Discretion Advised)]

It is the characteristic of a whore that she talks with one man, stares at another with a third person in her mind. It is not the mistake of that whore but is of the man who thinks that she will love him.

A foolish man easily falls in love with a whore and then becomes her toy. She will use him, betray him, trick him, and finally destroy him.

There existed no man on this planet who didn’t acquire ego after becoming successful and after enjoying a luxurious life. After getting involved in worldly matters, no man escaped from troubles. There is not a single man who did not fall for some beautiful woman. Has any beggar even gained respect? Has somebody remained unharmed after dealing with wicked people?

No golden deer took birth, nor anyone saw it before. Still, Lord Rama went after it. It appears as if the wisdom forsakes a person before the arrival of the problem in the life of that person.

A man might acquire some prominent position after putting a few efforts, but that is not everything. A crow sitting on the steeple of a palace is not honored, but an eagle is.

A man is respected for his qualities, even if he lacks Money. The little moon on the second day of antecedence is given much more importance than a full moon. (Astrological significance)

A man without qualities if praised by others; gains glory. If lord Indra starts praising himself then it will not add to his glory. Praising yourself will not earn you respect.

Like a gem embedded in an ornament of gold appears more elegant. In a similar manner, a man must enhance his good qualities to add more charm to his physical beauty.

A highly educated person might feel low in the absence of a patron. Just like a gem needs a suitable ornament to find its respectful place.

I am not interested in Money earned by; bringing pain to others, anti-religious activities, and by begging before an enemy.

Money comparable to the bride of an orthodox family is not of much use. It must be like a prostitute available to anyone in need. (planned investment is better than savings)

You cannot get satisfied with the Money you have, with women, and tasty food. The more you enjoy, the desire grows even more. Hunger and thirst cannot be satisfied.

The blessings earned after donating land, water, clothes, or after performing Yajna are not very significant when compared to blessings obtained after helping a deserving person in need.

It is better to die than to live a life of humiliation. You die once, but shame kills you every moment.

One must not act like a miser when it comes to speaking politely. All appreciate a polite talker, and speaking politely costs you nothing.

This world is like a tree with two life-giving fruits hanging from it. One is to speak politely, and the other is to be in the company of great people.

Like Money in the hands of others is of no use. In the same manner, knowledge confined to books is also of no use to a person. (Practical know-how is of more considerable significance than bookish knowledge)
