In Chanakya Niti, Kautilya has conveyed the following ideas about money. Hopefully, this article will help you to understand the philosophy of Chanakya and clarify a lot of things. Have a look:

A man must save money for the bad days and must protect his woman even at the cost of money that was saved. Yet the soul/conscience is to be protected at the cost of both.

Wealth is one of the most significant factors in life. It brings you the honor; it supports you and makes you capable of dealing with calamities.

There is no reason to live in a country/region where you cannot find employment, respect, well-wishers, and education.

A man shouldn’t reside at a place where people are not afraid of the law, where people are shameless, where exists no clever man, people lack in the spirit of charity, and where no art exists.

Do not live even for a single day at places where you cannot find these five things. They are prosperous businessmen, educated Brahmins, soldiers, a river, and a doctor.

Test the wife when your wealth is lost, a friend in calamity, relatives at the time of crises, and your servant after allocating him an important mission.

By working hard, you get good food to eat, the capability to digest it, a beautiful wife and happiness with her, and the wealth that can be utilized for good causes.

A person experiences heavenly joy whose son is obedient, whose wife is faithful, and who himself is satisfied with whatever he has (non-envying nature).

A true son is obedient to his father, a true father takes care of his son, Honesty is the quality of a true friend.

The power of businessman/Trader/Merchant lies in his wealth. People leave a weak king, a prostitute deserts improvised customer, and birds leave a withered tree. In the same manner, the guests must leave the house of the host after having food.

The friendship between people of equal status is considered as the best, serving under a king is one of the best employments a person can get, trading is the best occupation, and it is best for a lady to stay in the safety of the home.

A hard-working person cannot remain poor, a person who continuously remembers God is unlikely to perform a sin, a person with peace cannot quarrel. Similarly, a vigilant person has no fears.

Excess of beauty resulted in the kidnapping of Sita, the extreme ego of Ravana got him killed, and unnecessary charity caused great troubles to Raja Bali.

A person having no faith, no wealth and no love simply cannot acquire salvation. He keeps on taking births and keeps dying.

The best place to live is where fools are not honored, grains are stored safely, where husband and wife don’t quarrel. Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of wealth) resides at such locations.

A person whose knowledge is confined to books, a meal without an appetizer, living life in a community of poor people, an old man marrying a young woman, and to live in a community of poor people is like poison.

Charity puts an end to poverty, knowledge to ignorance. good behavior eliminates most of the troubles, and devotion in God marks an end to all fears.

Poor men desire for money. animals desire the power of speech. men desire for heaven while angels desire for Nirvana.

Money comes and goes, so is the youth. Life goes and goes the soul, nothing lasts forever. The only thing that stays firm is your faith.

A person with sufficient money makes a lot of friends and even more relatives. The interesting part is that he is also considered wise and full of wisdom.

A father who leaves debt for children is like an enemy and the same principle applies to a mother with loose character. Also, a foolish son and beautiful wife add to the pains of a man.

You can win a greedy by offering money, a proud person by pretending your devotion, you can win a fool by agreeing with him, and you can win a scholar by truth and only truth.

If you are facing loss in business or your heart is broken then don’t share such information with others. Also, one must not discuss scandals of family and incidents of insult.

You should be shameless when it comes to learning something, dealing in business, and having food.

You are happy only when your mind is at peace; running after wealth is simply an act of foolishness.

One must be satisfied with whatever he has as a wife, wealth, and income. Still! one must never get satisfied with the knowledge and acts of charity.

Money earned must be kept circulating and put to some good use. Just like the water of a pond having an inflow and outflow system is clean. On the other hand, Water-logged ponds collect dirt in them.

Money plays a very significant role in human life. On having money, the person is given respect, considered wise, and is preferred by women.

Those who desire only wealth belong to the lowest class of people. Those who desire wealth and respect are above them. The men who desire honor and respect are superior to all.

O God, wealth must go in hands of good people. Water in the sea is saline, but the water in the cloud gives life to all living creatures

It is a great tragedy to a man whose wife passes in old age, whose money is taken by a relative, and who lives on the food of others.

No blessing is bigger than peace. No joy is bigger than contentment. There is no religion bigger than mercy. For a man, greed is the worse disease.

Good qualities enhance the beauty of a person, genteelness adds to the glory of one’s family. Practical implementation is the biggest tribute to education, and wise expenditure is a great tribute to one’s wealth.

A man with beauty, but no talent is useless. A person with ill-manners brings shame to the family. Like money not spent wisely is a waste, so is the education that cannot be applied.

Following are most likely to destroy themselves; a greedy Brahmin, a contented (inactive) king, a coy prostitute, and a shameless woman.

Everyone respects wise men. They are rewarded with honor and money.  A person can attain everything through knowledge.  It is worshiped everywhere.

Lord Brahma created gold without fragrance, did not add sweet fruits to sugarcane, and did not add flowers in the sandalwood tree. In the same manner, he did not grant wealth to scholars and longer life to kings.  It appears as if the advisers in his council are not so good.

A man who recites scriptures just for making money and who has no problem in receiving alms from lowly people loses his respect permanently. People will begin treating him as an insignificant snake with no venom.

Whose anger is inadequate to inspire anyone, pleasing whom does not deliver profit, and one without authority to punish or reward is nothing, but insignificant man.

Poverty can easily be dealt with patience. Even ordinary clothes appear nice if clean. Food can be consumed if hot and fresh no matter if not tasty. Similarly, a good character is of great significance despite the lack of physical beauty.

A man without money is not poor in comparison to a man without knowledge.

Better to live in a forest with wild beasts, it is better to consume wild berries, it is better to sleep on the bed of thorns than living in poverty with your kith and kins.

Even the bees have to repent for storing too much honey which they collect after putting so much courage and hard work. In the same manner, the people who don’t do charity face heavy losses. The kings gain glory on helping the needy and their names withstand till eternity.

Such home is endowed with divine favor of God where sons & daughter obey orders, the housewife is sweet-tongued, family members are hardworking, the money is earned with honesty and is sufficient to fulfill their needs, food is in surplus, servants are faithful, where guests are welcomed and is often visited by learned spiritual teachers.

O king, a person who donates a little of his earning to deserving Brahmin (with full-time involvement in spreading enlightenment in the society) attracts multiple amounts of his donation in different ways by the grace of almighty God.

He is the lowliest; whose hands do not come forward for charity, ears do not listen to the sermons in holy scriptures, eyes never focus on saints, legs do not move on the path of pilgrimage, who earn money by unjust means, and who do not take care of their parent or guru.

A person who considers women of others as mother, the wealth of others as dirt, and one who sees his own soul in all living creatures; is the person who has really found the truth.

One must not worry about meals and must perform his duties. It is God who will arrange food for you.

A pitcher can be filled drop-by-drop and so is the case with your wealth.

The nature of noble people is quite strange i.e. instead of acting arrogant upon attaining wealth they bow down in humility and act more modestly and respectfully.

Like the udders on the neck of a goat are useless. In the same manner, the life of a person is totally useless; if he has no wealth, no love, and is devoid of religion with no hope of salvation.

It is not possible to fulfill each and every desire. Your fate will not be able to serve them all. The solution is that the man must feel satisfied with whatever possessions he has.

Poverty, diseases, conflicts, and other problems in life are nothing, but the fruits from the tree of one’s misdeeds.

You can earn money after losing it, you can make new friends, and also you can get another wife, but this is not the case with the body.

In this world, there are only three real gems. They are water, food grains, and good language. On the other hand, fools confuse gems with stones.

The wealth earned by unjust means will perish for sure.

Greed is the root cause of the trouble. A black bee enjoys nectar from a lotus flower, but in search of more, it goes to forests and paddy fields where it gets hurt from thorns.

I am not interested in money earned by; bringing pain to others, anti-religious activities, and by begging before an enemy.

You cannot get satisfied with the money you have, with women, and tasty food. The more you enjoy, the desire grows even more. Hunger and thirst cannot be satisfied.

Like Money in the hands of others is of no use. In the same manner, knowledge confined to books is also of no use to a person.

The charity adds to the beauty of hands and not the bangles.
